Melbourne, the most liveable city for 7 years in a row. But what if you are a budget traveller, can you also enjoy the worlds most liveable city without blowing your budget? Sometimes it feels like you can’t go to a major city without spending your entire savings. Well I’m here to give you 10 free things to do in Melbourne on a budget.
1. Street art
You can easily spend a day wandering the streets of Melbourne admiring the incredible street art. Whether it’s Hosier Lane or Union lane you won’t be disappointed.
2. St Kilda Fairy penguins
Grab a cheap bottle of wine and your nearest and dearest and spend an evening watching the sunset at St Kilda Pier as the little fairy penguins make their way home.
3. NGV free exhibitions
Spend a day wandering around the National Gallery of Victoria exploring all the free exhibitions on offer.
You are spoilt for beautiful beaches around Melbourne. Head to St Kilda to experience the summer beach atmosphere, or why not head up to Brighton to glance at the bright beach boxes whilst you sunbathe.
5. Shrine of remembrance
Nothing beats this spectacular view of Melbourne, alongside learning some history.
6. Night markets
Once summer hits Melbourne head to the night markets. On a Thursday stroll around St Kilda Twilight market to experience a chilled and fun atmosphere of music, dancing, food and drink. If one market isn’t enough then head into the city to explore the Queen Victoria summer night markets every Wednesday night.
7. State Library Victoria
For something a little different try the State Library Victoria. A historic building oozing with charm and interesting architecture.
My favourite free activity.
9. The Royal Botanical Gardens Victoria
I could literally spend hours meandering around the botanical gardens. Sitting amongst the greenery, staring aimlessly at the lake, or reading my book surrounded by the beautiful flowers.
10. Dandenong Ranges
If you like pure nature and walking in the outdoors the Dandenong ranges are for you. Spend a lovely morning walking the 1000 steps and an afternoon sharing a picnic and exploring the surrounding trails.
‘Til next time.
